Medtronic Recalls MiniMed Insulin Pumps Over Battery Issues

By Dean Seal

Medtronic has issued a voluntary recall on some of its insulin pumps over concerns about the length of their battery life.

The Dublin-based medical-device maker said Friday that customers of its MiniMed 600 series or 700 series insulin pumps have reported shortened battery life in pumps that have been dropped or experienced some kind of physical impact that damaged internal components.

"Even a single drop of the pump could result in reduced battery life, either immediately after the drop, or over time, and the issue will continue even after replacing the battery," Medtronic said.

This could result in the pump stopping insulin delivery sooner than expected and lead to issues that require medical intervention. Medtronic has received 170 reports of hyperglycemia and 11 reports of diabetic ketoacidosis since January 2023 potentially related to this issue.

The company is asking customers of those specific insulin pumps to check the pumps' battery status via built-in alerts and alarms and contact Medtronic if they observe a change in battery life.

Medtronic has started notifying affected pump users in July. The company said Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is classifying its actions as a class 1 recall.

A representative for Medtronic didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
