U.S. Futures Decline, European Stocks Mixed

U.S. futures for the S&P 500 were down 0.3% and futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3%. Changes in futures do not necessarily predict movements after the opening bell.

In Europe, the Stoxx Europe 600 declined 0.4% in morning trading. Stora Enso R added 4.5% and Daimler Truck rose 2.9%. On the other hand, K+S dropped 5.7%, and La Francaise des Jeux slipped 4.7%. The FTSE 100 added 0.2%. Other stocks in Europe were down as France's CAC 40 decreased 0.6% and Germany's DAX fell 0.5%.

The Wall Street Journal Dollar Index climbed 0.2% to 96.56.

In commodities, Brent crude gained 1.4% to $74.96 a barrel, and WTI crude rose 1.5% to $71.17 a barrel. The European benchmark price for natural gas, the Dutch futures contract TTF, was down 0.9% to 38.27 euros a megawatt hour.

The German 10-year Bund yield climbed by 2 basis points to 2.116% from 2.098%, and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury rose by 2 basis points to 3.805% from 3.788%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Stocks in Asia were mixed as Japan's Nikkei 225 index climbed 2%, whereas Hong Kong's Hang Seng declined 0.6%. Markets in China were closed.
