Hyundai Teams with Alphabet's Waymo on Self-Driving EVs
By Dean Seal
Hyundai Motor has entered into a partnership to put the autonomous technology of Waymo, the self-driving-car startup owned by Google's parent Alphabet, into its all-electric IONIQ 5 SUV.
The companies said Friday that Hyundai's IONIQ 5 SUV will also be added to the fleet for Waymo One, Waymo's autonomous ride-hailing service, as part of the first phase of the partnership.
Initial on-road testing of Waymo-enabled IONIQ 5s will start up late next year and the vehicles will join the Waymo One fleet in the years that follow, the companies said.
"The team at our new manufacturing facility is ready to allocate a significant number of vehicles for the Waymo One fleet as it continues to expand," said Hyundai Chief Operating Officer José Muñoz.
