Bankrupt Fisker is recalling 12,523 vehicles to address outer door handle defect

Issue affects door handles on 2023-2024 Model Year Fisker Ocean vehicles.

Fisker Inc. said Friday it has issued a voluntary recall of 12,523 vehicles in North America and Europe to address an issue involving the outer door handles.

The EV company, which filed for bankruptcy earlier this month, said the issue affects door handles on 2023-2024 Model Year Fisker Ocean vehicles.

The door handles "may become stuck due to a malfunctioning mechanism. Addressing this malfunction promptly is essential to ensure the safety and accessibility of the vehicle for its passengers," the company said in a statement.

The recall involves 8,204 vehicles in the U.S., 513 vehicles in Canada and 3,806 in Europe. The company expects that 2.5% of its vehicles may have the defect.

The company (FSRNQ) is planning an inspection of all four outer door handles on each vehicle and will use a specialized force checking tool provided by the supplier of the handles.

If the tool detects an issue, the door handle will be replaced. The company is expecting to complete the evaluations and repairs as soon as possible.

Fisker voluntarily recalled 18,346 of its Fisker Ocean electric sport-utility vehicles on June 18 for over-the-air (OTA) software updates. It said at the time that 11,201 Oceans were recalled because their current control software may cause the vehicle to enter a "safe state protection" mode, which could lead to a loss of motor power.

The total also included voluntary noncompliance recalls of 7,145 Oceans for not complying with certain regulatory standards regarding gauges and icons in the cluster display.
