Canada Prime Minister Trudeau Appoints New Transport Minister

By Paul Vieira

OTTAWA--Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a minor change to his cabinet after the transport minister announced his departure.

Trudeau said on Thursday that Anita Anand, the President of the Treasury Board, would take on the additional duties as head of the transport ministry. The Treasury Board is in charge of overseeing day-to-day administration of the government.

The former transport minister, Pablo Rodriguez, is leaving the Liberal cabinet to seek the leadership of Quebec's Liberal Party. The move was widely expected in Canadian political circles.

Rodriguez, who is from the Montreal area, is the second minister to leave the cabinet in recent months, amid dismal polling number in the last year for the governing Liberals. An election must be held no later than October of 2025.
