Amazon Names New India Head
By Tracy Qu
Amazon.com appointed Samir Kumar to be its new India head, as the e-commerce giant expands its business in the country.
Kumar, a 25-year veteran at the company, will take charge of Amazon's India consumer business in addition to overseeing the Middle East, South Africa and Turkey consumer businesses, the U.S. company said Wednesday in a statement.
Manish Tiwary, the current country manager for Amazon India, has decided to explore an opportunity outside the company, Amazon said.
Kumar will assume operational responsibilities for India starting Oct. 1, Amazon said.
The appointment comes at a time when the tech giant is scaling up its investment in India. Last May, Amazon's cloud-computing business said it planned to spend $12.8 billion to expand its data-center infrastructure in India by 2030.
"India remains an important priority for Amazon," said Amit Agarwal, Amazon's senior vice president for emerging markets, in a statement.
