Intel Gets Up to $3 Billion for Semiconductor Production Under Secure Enclave Program

By Connor Hart

Intel has been awarded up to $3 billion in direct funding to expand semiconductor manufacturing under the Chips and Science Act, the microprocessor and semiconductor company said.

The funding falls under the act's Secure Enclave program and builds on previous projects between Intel and the Defense Department, according to the Santa Clara, Calif., company.

With the funding, Intel said it would help secure the domestic chip supply chain, as well as collaborate with the Pentagon to enhance the resilience of U.S. technological systems through the advancement of secure and cutting-edge solutions.

Intel was previously awarded up to $8.5 billion in grants under the Chips and Science Act in March to support the construction and modernization of semiconductor commercial fabrication facilities. The company has previously collaborated with the Pentagon, including in 2020 when it was awarded the second phase of the SHIP program, and in 2021 when it was awarded an agreement to provide commercial foundry services for multiple phases of the Pentagon's RAMP-C program.

Implemented in President Biden's first year in office, the Chips and Science Act is an industrial strategy seeking to bolster the country's semiconductor sector.
