Turkey Books Wider Current Account Surplus as Summer Sun Lures Tourists

By Joshua Kirby

Turkey's current account widened as the summmer tourist season continued to boost the flow of money into the country.

The country in July booked a surplus of $566 million in its balance of payments, which measures inflows to and outflows from the Mediterranean republic. That widens the surplus of $330 million recorded a month earlier, when Turkey swung to a rare positive result in its current account.

With the summer tourism season in full flow, inbound travel was to thank for a second straight month out of the red. By contrast, Turkey booked a deficit in goods of more than $5 billion.
