Ford Recalls More Than Half Million Trucks Over Transmission Issue, NHTSA Says
By Michael Susin
Ford Motor is recalling more than half a million F-150s pickup trucks because the transmission can unexpectedly downshift into first gear independently of how fast the cars are moving.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the U.S. auto industry's top regulator, said in a filing made public Tuesday that vehicles may experience a signal loss of the output shaft speed sensor to the powertrain control module, which could potentially cause temporary and unintended downshift into first gear.
"A downshift to first gear without warning could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash." the NHTSA said.
The document said that 552,188 of the 2014 model year Ford F-150 vehicles are affected.
Owners will be notified by mail by July 5 to have the module calibration updated.
