Defense Unicorns Announces Contribution of Zarf to OpenSSF
Open-Source DevSecOps Solution for Airgap Now in the Hands of the Open Source Community
Defense Unicorns is proud to announce the contribution of Zarf, its innovative, open-source DevSecOps solution for airgap, to the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF). This contribution exemplifies Defense Unicorns' belief in the critical role of open-source software in advancing the mission of the United States Department of Defense.
“Zarf started with the very unique challenge of deploying systems on submarines where airgap was quite literally the reality,” said Jeff McCoy, Co-Founder of Defense Unicorns. “Over the years of expanding into space systems, cyber defense missions, airframes and various regulated cloud environments, Zarf has now evolved from an airgap tool to a way to deploy complex systems into any environment.”
Zarf is designed to enhance security and streamline operations within air-gapped environments, addressing key software deployment challenges facing the Department of Defense.
"Open source software is critical infrastructure used worldwide. We're proud to welcome Zarf to the OpenSSF. Zarf will enhance open source security in air-gapped environments, where other security tools may not function. We look forward to Zarf helping to make open source software secure for everyone," said Omkhar Arasaratnam, General Manager of OpenSSF.
To prepare Zarf for contribution to the OpenSSF, the Zarf team focused on improving stability, increasing Code Coverage for testing, reducing the time it takes to run the end-to-end test suite, and refactoring code to simplify onboarding of new community contributors.
"At Defense Unicorns, our commitment to open-source goes beyond code—it's about building bridges between the open-source community and our national security mission,” said Vice President of Product, Austen Bryan. “We hold a shared vision of technological advancement and making secure software accessible to all."
Defense Unicorns is eager to see how the community will evolve Zarf going forward.
