Sony to raise price of PS5 game console in Japan by nearly 20%

TOKYO - Sony (SONY) (JP:6758) plans to raise the price of its PlayStation 5 console in Japan by nearly 20% due to changes in the global economic environment, the Japanese company said in a blog post.

The PlayStation 5 console's new price tag will be set at 79,980 yen ($555.6) starting on Monday, the company said. The game console is currently sold at Y66,980 on Sony's online store.

The price hike applies to PlayStations with and without disk drives. Sony said it also plans to raise the prices of gaming accessories sold in Japan such as wireless controllers.
