Amazon Invests $5 Billion in Anthropic Amid Expanded Collaboration

By Kelly Cloonan

Amazon is investing $5 billion in Anthropic, with potential to put up to an additional $20 billion into the artificial intelligence startup in the future, as the companies plan to work together more closely.

The companies said Monday they are expanding their collaboration, with Anthropic committing to spend more than $100 billion over the next 10 years on Amazon technologies including on its custom silicon and chips. Anthropic will secure up to 5 gigawatts of Amazon's Trainium chips to train and power their advanced AI models.

The collaboration also includes an expansion of international inference in Asia and Europe, the companies said.

The companies have worked together on generative AI since 2023. Amazon previously invested $8 billion in Anthropic, and its potential future investment in the startup is tied to certain commercial milestones.
