Canada GDP Fades After Rising 0.2% in July

By Robb M. Stewart

OTTAWA--Canadian economic output picked up in July, buoyed by retail sales and ongoing strength in the public sector.

Gross domestic product, a broad measure of goods and services produced across the economy, increased 0.2% from the month before to 2.234 trillion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of US$1.733 trillion, Statistics Canada said Friday.

Economists were expecting GDP to rise 0.1%, just ahead of the data agency's earlier flash estimate for a second straight month of no change.

On a one-year basis, GDP advanced 1.5%.

The data agency said that advance information indicates GDP was essentially unchanged month-over-month in August, though the estimate will be updated.
