Alimentation Couche-Tard to Acquire GetGo Cafe

By Adriano Marchese

Alimentation Couche-Tard has agreed to acquire U.S.-based GetGo Cafe + Markets from supermarket retailer Giant Eagle for an undisclosed sum.

The Canadian convenience-store operator said Monday that the acquisition will add about 3,500 employees operating a network of around 270 convenience retail and fueling locations across the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana.

As part of the transaction, Couche-Tard said it will continue to partner on Giant Eagle's myPerks loyalty program.

GetGo Cafe's acquisition, which is expected to close some time next year, follows an earlier confirmation on Monday that it had submitted a "friendly, non-binding proposal" to Japan's Seven & i Holdings, which operates 7-Eleven convenience stores globally.

Couche-Tard has a network of 16,700 stores across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, central and eastern Europe, and throughout Asia.
