The formation of a well-developed & stable capital market and utilisation of the available
savings & resources in a productive manner is crucial for the growth of any economy. In the
early 1960s, for an economy like India, this was vital. It goes to the credit of the Government
of India and the vision of the then Finance Minister, that Unit Trust of India was established
on February 01, 1964, under the Unit Trust of India Act, 1963; with the objective of
channelising the household savings for development of capital markets and to enable the Indian
citizens to reap the benefits of a developed capital market. This was a significant landmark in
the financial sector in India. The Reserve Bank of India was instrumental in setting up UTI and
nurturing it during its formative years.
Over the following three decades, UTI was the only institution facilitating the common man to
invest in capital markets and reap benefits thereon, fulfilling its role as envisioned. As a pioneer
institution, UTI contributed immensely to the progressive changes in the industrial growth
process. The flagship scheme of UTI – the Unit Scheme 1964 was a great success. This was
followed by the Children’s Gift Plan in 1970, the Unit Linked Insurance Plan in 1971, and
other schemes that were well received by the people.
UTI Mastershare (now known as UTI Large Cap Fund), a pure equity product that was
launched in 1986 is today the longest running large-cap equity fund in India. UTI went
international in the same year with the launch of UTI India Fund – the first Indian offshore
fund that provided a unique opportunity to individuals and foreign institutions to invest into
the Indian securities markets.
UTI has also been a driving force in the promotion of several developmental financial
institutions in India, thus aiding further deepening of the financial sector. Among these were
Credit Rating and Information Services Limited (1987), Stock Holding Corporation of India
(1987), Over-the-Counter Exchange of India Limited (1990), National Securities Depository
Limited (1995).
UTI also set up institutions for helping people understand the working of the capital markets
and providing them with tools for investing in them. These included: UTI Investment Advisory
Services in 1988 – to supplement the equity research & UTI Institute of Capital Markets (UTI
ICM) in 1990 – to promote training and research in capital market (that eventually became the
National Institute of Securities Markets) and UTI Bank Ltd. in 1994 – one of the first private
sector bank to be set up (which later on became Axis Bank).
As part of the restructuring process, UTI Asset Management Co. Ltd. (UTI AMC) was carved
out of Unit Trust of India as a SEBI regulated mutual fund, with State Bank of India, Life
Insurance Corporation of India, Bank of Baroda and Punjab National Bank as its sponsors.
Recognising the need to assimilate international best practices in the organization for long term
growth and diversification, in January 2010, M/s. T. Rowe Price, a USA based global asset
manager became a strategic shareholder of UTI AMC. In October 2020, UTI AMC was listed
on the Indian stock exchanges, providing an opportunity to many of UTI schemes’ investors to
become part owners of the organization that they have been associated with for a long time.
