Seven & i: Takeover Offer Lifts Share Price Close to Our Fair Value

The takeover offer by Canada’s Couche-Tard for narrow-moat Seven & i sent the latter’s Aug. 19 closing share price to JPY 2,161, which is close to our fair value estimate of JPY 2,300 per share. We maintain our fair value estimate and see the shares as fairly valued presently. There is no explicit share price offer mentioned yet, but according to a Financial Times report, Couche-Tard has been talking to Seven & i about a possible takeover for over a year. We believe that for the takeover offer to be successful, the offer price should be at least equal to our fair value estimate.
