Face Value

The dollar value of a bond or share as printed on the face of a certificate.

Face value is ordinarily the amount the issuer promises to pay at maturity but it is no indication of market value. For example, a low-grade bond my have a face value of $1000 but can trade at a market price of $100. Face value is sometimes referred to as par value.
