Dow Theory

The theory of market analysis based upon the performance of the Dow Jones Industrial and Transportation Averages.

According to Dow Theory, a significant market trend is not confirmed unless both Dow Jones indexes reach new highs or lows. Respectively, if they don't both move in the same direction, the conclusion is that the market will return to its former trading range.
