Capital Return

Morningstar provides the portion of a fund’s total returns that was generated by realized and unrealized increases in the value of securities in the portfolio.

Frequently, a stock fund’s returns will be derived entirely from capital return. By looking at capital return and income return, an investor can see whether the fund’s returns come from capital, from income, or from a combination of the two. Adding capital and income return will produce the fund’s total return.
