Toronto Stocks Advance as Earnings Season Rolls On
By Robb M. Stewart
Stocks in Toronto were higher Thursday as investors continued to digest a raft of quarterly earnings reports from companies in Canada and the U.S.
The benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index was 0.3% higher at 21785.76 in midday trading, building on a modest advance the previous session. Industrial, energy and retail stocks were among the biggest drivers of the index, offsetting weakness in the technology sector.
The blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 was ahead 0.3% at 1305.43.
Thomson Reuters was among the biggest risers of the day, climbing 6% to C$220.99 after it posted stronger-than-expected adjusted earnings for the first quarter and it raised its target for annual revenue growth.
Other market movers:
BCE's shares fell 2.2% to C$44.74 after the telecommunications company reported a fall in quarterly net income and its operating revenue came in blow analysts expectations.
AltaGas declined 1.8% to C$29.60 after posting a drop in first-quarter profit at its utilities operations following the sale of its Alaska assets, which held back a strong period for its midstream business.
Air Canada was down 8% to C$8.82 after the airline reported a loss thanks to higher costs in the latest quarter.
Colliers International shares dipped 0.9% to C$142.65 following a swing to a profit in the first quarter as its outsourcing and advisory operations drove increased revenue and offset continued weakness in its capital markets business.
